Computers – we have all had to deal with them one way or another. From video games to social media, these technological creations also come with an important note. If we want to keep our computers running at optimum capacity, we have to keep them clean.

Both the components and the internal memory have to be cleaned regularly if we want our machines to operate properly. So, on that note, let us look into the ideals of Clean Up Your Computer Month!

History of Clean Up Your Computer Month

The first substantial computer was the giant ENIAC machine, created by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania. ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator) used a word of 10 decimal digits instead of binary ones like previous calculators/computers. ENIAC was also the first machine to use more than 2,000 vacuum tubes, using nearly 18,000 vacuum tubes instead.

Storage in those vacuum tubes require the machinery to keep cool, taking up over 167 square meters (1800 square feet) of floor space. Nonetheless, it had punched-card input and output. It also arithmetically had 1 multiplier, 1 divider-square rooter, and 20 adders employing decimal “ring counters,” which served as adders and quick-access (0.0002 seconds) read-write register storage. ENIAC was productively used from 1946 to 1955. The 1960’s saw large mainframe computers become more common in large industries, the US military, and space program. IBM became the unquestioned market leader in selling these large, expensive, error-prone, and very hard to use machines.

A veritable explosion of personal computers occurred in the early 1970s, starting with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak exhibiting the first Apple II at the first West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco. The Apple II boasted built-in BASIC programming language, color graphics, and a 4,100 character memory for only $1,298. Programs and data could be stored on an everyday audio-cassette recorder. Before the end of the fair, Wozniak and Jobs had secured 300 orders for the Apple II and from there Apple took off.

Also introduced in 1977 was the TRS-80. This was a home computer manufactured by Tandy Radio Shack. In its second incarnation, the TRS-80 Model II, came complete with a 64,000 character memory and a disk drive to store programs and data on. At this time, only Apple and TRS had machines with disk drives. With the introduction of the disk drive, personal computer applications took off as a floppy disk was a most convenient publishing medium for distribution of software.

IBM, which up to this time had been producing mainframes and minicomputers for medium to large-sized businesses, decided that it had to get into the act and started working on the Acorn, which would later be called the IBM PC. The PC was the first computer designed for the home market which would feature modular design so that pieces could easily be added to the architecture.

Most of the components surprisingly came from outside of IBM, since building it with IBM parts would have cost too much for the home computer market. When it was introduced, the PC came with a 16,000 character memory, keyboard from an IBM electric typewriter, and a connection for tape cassette player for $1,265.

By 1984, Apple and IBM had come out with new models. Apple released the first generation Macintosh, which was the first computer to come with a graphical user interface(GUI) and a mouse. The GUI made the machine much more attractive to home computer users because it was easy to use.

Sales of the Macintosh soared like nothing ever seen before. IBM was hot on Apple’s tail and released the 286-AT, which with applications like Lotus 1-2-3, a spreadsheet, and Microsoft Word, quickly became the favorite of business concerns.

That brings us up to about ten years ago. Now people have their own personal graphics workstations and powerful home computers. The average computer a person might have in their home is more powerful by several orders of magnitude than a machine like ENIAC. The computer revolution has been the fastest growing technology in man’s history.

How to celebrate Clean Up Your Computer Month

To celebrate, all we have to do is turn off our computers and makes sure that the inside is clean and free from dust. Afterwards we need to reactivates our computers and clear up any space on the hard drives that we possibly can, and let’s not forget to close up our computers after cleaning out the interior.

When the cold weather is in abundance, what better way to sit down and warm up than with a nice, warm bowl of soup? Where did soup come from, and how was it created? Let’s find out as we dive into the history of Soup Month!

The soul warming history of Soup Month

Historical evidence of the existence of soup dates all the way back to about 20,000 B.C. Boiling was not a common cooking technique until the invention of a waterproofed container, which started out as clay vessels. Animal Hides and watertight baskets were used along with heated rocks. The word soup itself derives from the French word soupe which means soup or broth. The word restaurant was first used in France, around the 16th century, to refer to a highly concentrated, inexpensive soup, sold by street vendors, that was advertised as an antidote to physical exhaustion.

In 1765, a Parisian entrepreneur opened a shop specializing in such soups. This prompted the use of the modern word restaurant for the eating establishments. In the US, the first colonial cookbook was published by William Parks in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1742, based on Eliza Smith’s The Compleat Housewife; or Accomplished Gentlewoman’s Companion, and it included several recipes for soups and bisques.

A 1772 cookbook titled The Frugal Housewife, had an entire chapter around the entire subject of soups. In 1897, Doctor John T. Dorrance, a chemist with the Campbell Soup Company invented condensed soup, which has grown exponentially in popularity in the modern era. Condensing soup allows soup to be packaged into a smaller can and sold at a lower price than other canned soups. The soup is usually doubled in volume by adding a “can full” of water or milk (about 10 ounces).

Since the 1990s, the canned soup market has burgeoned with soups marketed as “ready-to-eat,” which require no additional liquid to prepare. Microwaveable bowls have expanded the ready-to-eat canned soup market even more, offering convenience (especially in workplaces) and are popular lunch items.

How to celebrate Soup Month

To celebrate, we could all make soup with our families at home and stay warm while we eat the soul-warming liquid that we all know and love. Here’s a recipe for Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Soup.

Ingredients

  • 1 Chopped Onion
  • 1 Can of Chili Beans
  • 1 Can of Black Beans
  • 1 Can of Whole Kernel Corn, Drained
  • 1 Can of Tomato Sauce
  • 1 can or bottle of beer.
  • 2 cans of diced tomatoes with green chilis.
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning
  • 3 whole skinless, boneless chicken breasts
  • 1 package of shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour Cream (optional)
  • Crushed Tortilla Chips (Optional)

Directions

  1. Place the onion, chili beans, black beans, corn, tomato sauce, beer, and diced tomatoes in a slow cooker. Add taco seasoning, and stir to blend. Lay chicken breasts on top of the mixture, pressing down slightly until just covered by the other ingredients. Set slow cooker for low heat, cover, and cook for 5 hours.
  2. Remove chicken breasts from the soup, and allow to cool long enough to be handled. Stir the shredded chicken back into the soup, and continue cooking for 2 hours. Serve topped with shredded Cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and crushed tortilla chips, if desired.

There are very few foods that suggest Scotland quite so strongly as shortbread. The only other close contender would be haggis and those tend to evoke rather mixed sentiments when mentioned to anyone outside of Scotland. Yeah, there are Scotch eggs too, but we’d like to remind you that while they are decidedly British in invention, it’s harder to pin them particularly on Scotland.

Scotch whiskey is a beverage after all, so it doesn’t really count. While no Robert Burns Night observance would be complete without some shortbread, we feel that having a day dedicated to making and eating shortbread can’t really be a bad thing.

After all, who doesn’t like shortbread? So now you have two days where you can enjoy shortbread, even though we knew that shortbread is good year round and no one really needs an excuse to make and enjoy shortbread.

History of Shortbread Day

If you’re wondering about the history of shortbread itself, well, it has medieval origins and supposedly Mary, Queen of Scotland, invented modern shortbread in the 16th century by adding sugar to the existing recipe. We can’t verify whether or not that story is true.

It sounds like one of those popular myths like George Washington’s cherry tree, but for all we know it could actually be based in fact. Scotland has been inseparable from shortbread since the 18th century. After all, the first printed recipe for shortbread was published by one Mrs. McLintock back in 1736 and the association has stuck ever since.

While the mid-18th century was a critical period in Scottish history, even something mundane as a recipe became a marker of national identity. Therefore, we will say that shortbread is delicious and is worthy of such an honor.

How to celebrate Shortbread Day

We think that the best way to celebrate International Shortbread Day would have to involve shortbread in some way. Yeah, you get those cute little boxes of imported Scottish shortbread in some specialty shops, but why not make your own or host a shortbread party?

It’s not really all that difficult to make shortbread, with most recipes basically involving one part sugar, two parts butter, and three parts flour. You can of course add various things to it as well. Anything from dry fruits to chocolate chips to lavender, but the basic recipe remains the same.

Given the fact that it’s simple and easy to experiment with, we don’t think there’s really any excuse for you to not make some delicious shortbread for International Shortbread Day.

Huh? Did we hear you say “but I don’t have a recipe for shortbread, how can I make it?” Well, we’re including a shortbread recipe just so that excuse won’t impede you from actually making and enjoying shortbread.

So here it is:

2 1/4 cups (12oz) all-purpose flour

1/2 cup (4oz) sugar

1 cup (8oz) butter

Preheat your oven to 375°F/190°C and mix all of the ingredients together until they form a stiff dough. You should add any additional ingredients like chocolate chips or lavender at this stage; it doesn’t make much difference whether you mix by hand or using a mixer.. Roll out the dough and form round shapes, which should then be scored into triangles, and prick with a fork so that you don’t get air bubbles. You could also use a shortbread mold as well. Bake it for 25-30 minutes and sprinkle it with sugar immediately upon removing it from the oven. Congratulations, you now have freshly-baked shortbread to enjoy for International Shortbread Day and all-year round.

Why Do We Celebrate National Soup Month?

National Soup Month Activities

  1. Throw a winter soup party

Start off the menu with a soup made with winter vegetables and other farm-to-table ingredients, and end with a heavenly dessert consommé. Or the uninitiated can hit the stores and pick from an impressive selection of heat and serve soups. Whatever works!

  2. Pay it forward

If you have soup at your table, you are fortunate. Volunteer at a soup kitchen and feed the hungry.

  3. Invent your family soup recipe

Put on your chef’s hat. Ask everyone in the family to pick their favorite vegetable, meat, herb, or spice. Include them in a family recipe that you can hand down to the next generation!

Why We Love National Soup Month

  1. No cook spoils the soup

Try it! Throw all your favorite ingredients in broth, with a bit of pre-made spice mix (whatever you fancy). Add cayenne for an extra kick. Or not. Slow cook. Cool. Purée. Add butter. Salt. Voila! A tasty soup is ready. Anybody can cook soup. And survive on it, if needed.

  2. You can never tell what’s in it

And that’s a good thing. How else would mothers hide all those yucky but nutritious veggies that kids turn up their noses at!

  3. It’s a double-edged sword

Soup can work up an appetite when served at the start of a course, or stave off hunger when eaten as a meal, helping in weight management.

Beans are a common food around the globe and for good reason: they’re rich in fiber, protein, and can be delicious. You might think of beans only as an ingredient in chili con carne or baked beans, but they’re not limited to these applications – in Japan, for instance, red beans are commonly used in desserts.

There are also various Chinese sweets that also incorporate either red beans or mung beans. That, of course, excludes things like soya beans which are used both fresh (as edamame) as well as in various sauces and condiments ranging from soya sauce to miso and various fermented condiments found throughout southeast Asia and northeast India.

Tempeh and tofu are also made from soya bean and that just goes to show how versatile and essential beans are to various cuisines worldwide. So whether you’re indulging in a nice steamy bowl of chili or a Japanese sweet, there are numerous ways to celebrate humble beans.

History of Bean Day

The day commemorates the death of the geneticist Gregor Mendel, whose experiments with breeding pea plants formed the basis of modern genetics. From what we could find, it would appear that Paula Bowen is the creator of Bean Day.

Her main reasons were that there aren’t many holidays to celebrate around the time that Bean Day has typically been celebrated. Plus she thought that the world needed a day to honor Mr. Bean. Her father was a pinto bean farmer, so she’s pretty familiar with beans in general and no doubt was raised on them. Beans are also healthy and common in many cuisines throughout the world, so we’re not at all surprised that there’s a day dedicated to their celebration.

Electronic greeting card websites seem to have a lot of references to Bean Day, but we’re not sure if it actually means that e-card companies actually invented Bean Day or if they’ve just been the most effective at capitalizing on it. Small matter though – if you hate beans and don’t want to have anything to do with them on Bean Day, you can still send greeting cards to your friends to mark the occasion. Some people think that it’s actually called ‘National Bean Day’, but there’s no congressional record nor any presidential proclamation for such a day. So it’s safe to assume that it’s not an officially recognized occasion.

How to celebrate Bean Day

Beans are one of the most versatile food items. The best day to celebrate Bean Day would be to involve beans in all of your meals for the day, particularly in places where you wouldn’t necessarily expect them. Start the day with a traditional full English breakfast, which includes baked beans and toast among all of the other things, then have an ordinary lunch followed by red bean ice cream or red bean mochi, and for dinner prepare some meal which involves beans – chili, black beans and rice, white bean soup, North Indian rajma, or any other bean specialty.

Since we want to encourage you to celebrate Bean Day,, we’re including a bean recipe to help stir your creativity. Olan is a traditional mildly-spiced vegetarian curry that comes from the south Indian state of Kerala and it includes not just beans but also coconut milk and pumpkin. You could have it on its own with rice or even rotis, but it’s equally delicious as part of a larger meal. So here’s the recipe, it’s actually really simple to make:

  • 1/2 cup dried red cowpeas (or any other red beans – there’s no reason why you couldn’t use kidney beans), soaked overnight in water
  • 3 cups thin coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup thick coconut milk
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups pumpkin, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 6 sliced shallots
  • 6 curry leaves (you can find them in an Indian grocer, or if you can’t just leave them out if you have to)

Cook the beans in the thin coconut milk with green chillies, cumin, and salt in a medium saucepan for 25-30 minutes (until they’re soft). Add the pumpkin and cook for another five minutes, then stir in the thick coconut milk, remove from heat, and keep aside. Heat the oil in a small skillet and add the mustard seeds. When they start to pop, sputter, and fly all over your kitchen, add the shallots and curry leaves. Fry until they’re light brown. Stir in the seasoned oil with the pumpkin-bean curry and it’s ready to eat. Happy Bean Day!

Why Do We Celebrate National Bath Safety Month?

How to Observe National Bath Safety Month

  1. Install no-slip mats in the bath

These are low-cost — but absolutely necessary — additions to the bath. They're a simple solution that helps prevent slips in the tub. And put small no-slip rugs outside the bath, too.

  2. Safety (handles) first

Install a couple of safety handles in the bath and near the toilet to prevent slips and falls and to assist those who need it from entering and exiting the tub or shower. They're also a good idea for helping those who have difficulty standing up from the toilet.

  3. Childproof the bathroom

Make sure items intended for adults — sharp razors, clippers, tweezers — are kept safely stored in the bathroom and away from curious hands of little ones.

Why National Bath Safety Month is Important

  1. It reminds us to protect those we love

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an alarming stat: drowning remains a leading cause of death — while infants and adults older than 85 are most likely to drown in a bathtub.

  2. Knowledge is power

Protecting ourselves and those we love begins by learning the facts. National Bath Safety Month inspires us to seek them out. (And you came to the right place for that!)

  3. Better safe than sorry

It may seem like too much trouble to retrofit the bath in order to protect ourselves and others from what may seem like a rare occurrence. Unfortunately, those sound like famous last words.

This January is Bath Safety month, reminding you to take some extra precautions and save yourselves from home injuries. Bathing is such a routine activity that we often neglect to take proper precautions while we’re in what is absolutely one of the most dangerous places in our homes. But there are a lot of things we can do to minimize the risk of injury in the bath. And many of these precautions are especially important for the very young and the very old. Safety bars — or grab handles — and non-slip mats inside the tub or shower are just two of the most effective — and most common — ways to stay safe in our soapy havens. Let’s look at a few more — in honor of National Bath Safety Month, which takes place every January.

Are you organized? It’s an important question. There are many ways of being organized, but some of us certainly have better organizational skills than others. A bit of organization can make even the most chaotic of spaces relatively manageable. Sometimes being organized is actually a safety issue.

Think about the job of a surgeon – if something were misplaced, that could be a serious problem. Not everyone finds themselves in such high-pressure situations, but anyone could use a bit of organization in their life. After all, when was the last time that you spent an hour looking for something in the closet and had to dig through the mess only to have to put it all back?

Some of us even keep bedrooms where the floor itself is an obstacle course to navigate around. Still, others keep their cars in such disarray with a collection of fast-food containers and cups haphazardly thrown in the back along with all of their candy wrappers. Yeah, we’re sure that you’re aware of just how bad it can get.

History of Get Organized Month

Back in 2005, the Association of Professional Coordinators decided that they wanted to increase awareness of the significance of organization and the value of employing a professional organizer. Studies show that individuals waste up to an hour every day on average, searching for things that they’ve misplaced. As such, we definitely agree with the sentiment that everyone can stand to benefit from getting and staying organized.

How to celebrate Get Organized Month

We suggest that you take the whole month to truly consider whether you’re organized and the things that you should focus on. Perhaps you keep both your personal and work spaces perfectly tidy. Nevertheless, forget dates; take note of them so you don’t forget. Perhaps you have cupboards and drawers at home that you can’t even close because there’s so much random stuff just crammed inside. Even then, take the time to take everything out and figure out its rightful place.

Don’t sweat it because you have a whole month to organize everything. Perhaps there’s just too much clutter and disorganization at work. If so, do what you can to remedy that. If you’ve got kids, this is a good time to teach them why it’s important not to keep their room a mess and then help them clean it up. There are also various tools that you can employ to help you stay organized, everything from apps to professional organizers to old-fashioned label makers. This month is the perfect time to think about investing in those things.
